Just a quick look back…
This morning, I have uploaded a new song – “Falling in Love (While Everything’s Falling Apart)” to the Nights on Venus page on ReverbNation. It’s a slightly different song, in contrast to the debut album – slightly more uptempo, more summer-y, more “sunny” (like ‘Marco’ in “High Fidelity”), and comes complete with crickets. OK, it may not be as summer-y as say the Beach Boys or Lesley Gore’s “California Nights” (or even Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning”), but play “Falling in Love…” right after “Cognac and Cloves” and you’ll practically be able to taste that grape sno-cone (spiked with vodka, of course) while it’s melting in its paper container.
The song is not so much a new direction in what I’m doing as much as it simply expands on that musical direction – opens things up a bit. Just another aspect and musical flavor.
“Falling in Love…” was partially recorded while I was in Golden/Denver, and partially recorded in Dallas once I got back last week. I look at it as closing the gap, somewhat, between a lot of my solo work which is more uptempo, more pop-oriented, and the slower compositions I have been recording as Nights on Venus. It initially grew out of the chord progression in the middle of the song, the 8-bar piano bridge, which is the only part of the original song that was retained.
As this is a ‘summer song’ and it is the summer, “Falling in Love (While Everything’s Falling Apart)” goes well with relaxing by the pool or sitting out on the balcony in the evenings with a cold Dos Equis/Margarita/Pinot Grigio/____________ (insert your favorite beverage here – be sure and add a cocktail umbrella for maximum effect). Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how it works for you.

But which is the ‘falling in love’ part and the ‘falling apart’ part?
More new music is coming soon. Even though NoV just released the debut album in June, I find myself writing and recording daily now during what has become a very creative period… because ‘music never sleeps’. “Falling in Love…” will probably be the first song on a 5 or 6-song EP to be released by the end of the year – a companion set to the first album.
